The Audi R8 is developed by Quattro GmbH, which is the sports division of Audi. It’s very similar to the Lamborghini Gallardo (no surprise there, as they both share a parent company). The construction of the car is based around Audi’s Space Frame, which is also used extensively in the Audi TT models.
The R8 road car name is based on the Audi R8 race car, which was used in the Le Mans 24 Hours race series in the early 2000′s.
Originally equipped with a 4.2 litre V8 petrol engine, producing a phenomenal 414 bhp, with 317 lb/ft of torque, the car’s engineers have also seen fit to equip it with a 5.2 litre V10 engine (similar to the one used in the Lamborghini Gallardo). With the 5.2 litre engine having a power output of 518 bhp (391 lb/ft of torque), the Audi R8 can certainly keep pace with many equivalent supercars costing over twice as much.
With prices starting from around 85,000 GBP, the R8 is one of the most ‘affordable’ supercars on the market today.
